The Star-Spangled Man with a plan is back in Captain America: New World Order.
Not quite yet, but he will. Sam Wilson aka The Falcon aka the new Captain America is getting his own solo film following the success of his team miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Captain America: New World Order is set to be the tenth installment in Marvel’s Phase 5, which began with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and will serve as a sort of continuation of the series.

Captain America: New World Order release date
What we do know so far is that Captain America will follow Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels cinematically with a release date of May 3, 2024.
Its release date is ahead of Thunderbolts, which will pick up threads from other MCU characters like Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier.
Cast of Captain America: New World Order
The announced casting for Cap 4 is already causing a stir. Speaking about taking the mantle of Captain America from Chris Evans, Mackie told Yahoo, “My Cap, he’s not a superhero.”
“He doesn’t have a super serum. So his superpower is his humanity. So I think he has to come on stage with him with a very different understanding of what it’s like to be a good guy or a bad guy, and what are the choices that make you draw that line like that you did it. I see him more as a humane cap as opposed to a cap of judgment where this is right or wrong. There are choices that make you choose right or wrong.”
“And [he’ll have] a Flyer costume,” Mackie added in reference to Sam Wilson’s new winged red, white, and blue threads. “Because every day is leg day [in the gym]. We use pure spandex, none of that cotton stuff. We’re making spandex right now.”
Not only is Anthony Mackie back as Sam Wilson / Captain America, making his eighth appearance in the MCU, but he is also joined by Harrison Ford as former General and Secretary of State Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.

Ford takes on the role of Wiliam Hurt, who played him after dying from brain cancer, from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk to 2021’s Black Widow. Ford’s iteration of the character was heralded as President of the United States, suggesting that Ross will once again attempt to control superheroes. Ford has signed on for two films, this one and Thunderbolts to come.
Also returning to the cast is Tim Blake Nelson as Dr. Samuel Sterns. Nelson was last seen as Sterns in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk as an ally of Bruce Banner, who had gammer-irradiated blood dripping into an open wound, revealing his mutation.
Not much has come from him since then, but it’s suspected that Nelson will take on Sterns’ villainous alter-ego The Leader to make trouble for Wilson.

Carl Lumbly is back from Falcon and the Winter Soldier as Isiah Bradley, a former super soldier who now lives a normal life. Bradley’s arc on the show demonstrated that black Americans have historically been undervalued, and that will clearly weigh heavily on Sam going forward.

Lumbly’s grandson Eli, played by Elijah Richardson, also becomes the superhero Patriot in the comics. Whether or not that happens in the film remains to be seen.
Also back is Joaquin Torres, portrayed by Danny Ramirez. In the series, he was an Air Force Lieutenant on the hunt for the Flag Smashers, but as promised by Marvel, he will have an expanded role in the film, wearing the Falcon suit as the character’s second iteration.
New cast members announced for the film include Emmy-nominated Israeli actress Shira Haas as Sabra, a character from the comics associated with the mutants. In the comics, she is a Mossad agent with superpowers such as healing, strength, and stamina, as well as the ability to bestow superpowers on others and transfer their life force. The film feels like a deliberate intrigue story.

Also joining the cast is Xosha Roquemore, although her role has not yet been announced. Roquemore is best known for roles on Precious, The Disaster Artist and Black Monday.
Captain America: New World Order plot
Little is known about the plot aside from the characters announced so far, but we do know that it will tie into Falcon and the Winter Soldier and see Sam coming to terms with being a black Captain America in a world of heightened tension.
Mackie has spoken out about the weight that comes with the Captain America name and the inclusion of Lumbly, as Bradley hints that this will still weigh heavily on Wilson’s shoulders, adding some much-needed emotional weight.
Bringing back Sterns as an antagonist also suggests it’s about bringing threads back from phase 1 and making them relevant again, like She-Hulk brought back Abomination.
Who is making Captain America: New World Order?
Captain America: New World Order is directed by Julius Onah. Onah previously directed the sci-fi sequel The Cloverfield Paradox and the independent drama Luce.
Both give a sense of what Marvel is looking for in a director. Luce was all about race and psychological exploration, while Cloverfield Paradox showed Onah’s ability to handle a large cast, visual effects, and the confines of working within a franchise, both of which bode well for him to be taking the reins of the Franchises from previous directors takes on Joe Johnston, The Russo Brothers and Kari Skogland.

The screenplay is being written by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. Spellman was both a writer and showrunner on Falcon and The Winter Soldier, while Musson also worked on scripts for the series, suggesting this will be both a continuation of the series and a new iteration of Cap.
Captain America: New World Order will be released on May 3, 2024.
