Hugh Grant divides fans with ‘rude’ replies during ‘painful’ Oscars 2023 interview

Hugh Grant has divided Oscars viewers with a ‘painful’ red carpet interview.

On Sunday (March 12), the British star drew laughter and criticism for his blunt answers.

The actor, known for his wry wit and sarcasm, was interviewed by Ashley Graham, who seemed unprepared for his answers – or lack thereof.

Graham asked Grant if he was excited about the prospect of any particular actor winning, to which he replied, “No, not one particular one.”

Graham tried another question and asked, “Okay, what are you wearing tonight?”

In response, the actor said, “Just my suit.”

Graham then decided to ask Grant about the sequel to Knives Out glass onion, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Grant has a cameo appearance in the film.

“Tell me what it was like to be there glass onion?” she asked, adding, “It was such an amazing film. I really loved it. What’s it like shooting something like that?”

Grant said: “Well, I’m hardly into it. I’m in about three seconds.”

Graham replied, “Yeah, but you still showed up and had fun, right?” to which Grant replied, “Um, almost.”

When Graham realized she’d hit a wall with the actor, she ended the interview. Grant appeared to shake his head in confusion as he walked away.

“Ashley Graham’s interview with Hugh Grant is the most embarrassing piece of television in 2023 and I live for it,” wrote @joeyohern on Twitter.

@EvanRomano added: “The HughGrant red carpet interview that just aired on ABC was a complete disaster lol. As he walked away, he shook his head in shock.”

Meanwhile, @TerryMac_ asked, “Was the interview with Hugh Grant the most uncomfortable thing ever?!?

There were many who criticized Grant for his short answers, with @Kirsten53708048 saying “Don’t do an interview if you clearly don’t want to be interviewed.”

@sbthro then wrote: “Hugh Grant was so rude during his interview! Ashley Graham handled it with grace. His eye roll at the end was disgusting!”

The 2023 ceremony brought great victories for Everything everywhere at oncewho took home seven awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh.

Elsewhere during the ceremony, Angela Bassett was praised for her “genuine” reaction to losing in the Best Supporting Actor category — something Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors seemed to address onstage shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, host Jimmy Kimmel opened the Los Angeles event with an opening monologue, poking fun at him avatar Director James Cameron, Will Smith’s slap in the face last year and what viewers called a “low blow” the poor box office performance of Babylon.
